{DIY} How (Not) To Cut Down a Tree in Your Backyard

Happy Spring, everyone!!  To kick off the new season, here’s a little DIY action that we did a few weekends back on a GORGEOUS March day!

WARNING!  Do NOT try this at home, people!  Okay, so this isn’t really a “how-to” but I wanted to write up a little post about our backyard.  Or lack thereof.  But that is what this summer is about – pretty up the outside of the house!  Now that the inside is livable, the landscaping, paint, etc. is our priority!

We had this half-dead, skinny pine tree in our backyard – right next to the house and we decided that it just had to go to make room for some bigger plans!  So here are some photos of Glenn and the day he decided to cut it down!

Getting his PPE ready (personal protective equipment, ha!).  Notice the rope attached to his belt loops, and to the chainsaw.  Right now I should mention that Glenn is a professional wildland firefighter (an engine operator) and has a lot of experience with chainsaws and cutting down trees.  This is not the best way to cut down a tree (hiring a professional is probably most people’s bet), but Glenn knew he could do it on his own.  The tricky part is that electrical wire that goes from our roof to the power pole – that is why he had to climb up and cut it down in sections.

Here he is climbing the tree…

Scoping it out to figure out how the heck to get it down safely!

Using a hand saw to cut off branches.

Now using the axe to chop off some branches to get a good foot-hold.

Getting ready to start cutting the top 1/3rd of the tree off!  He cut it down in 3 pieces.

Now you’ll notice how I have no more pictures until the end.  I was either helping Glenn by pulling on the rope, which was attached to the tree, so it fell in the right direction (avoiding the power line), or I was inside consoling a hysterical 7 month old who decided she doesn’t like the sound of the chain saw!  It was quite a team effort, but it seems to open the backyard up a lot more – don’t you think?

Aaahhh…much better!

Now if we only had some more grass.  Soon, though!!

The dogs seem to like it!  :)  Now to get rid of that ugly “porch.”  And build a new fence.  And paint…I’m so glad spring is here!

{Likely Favorites} Je t'aime Faux Bois!

Yes, I took 3 quarters of French in college! Can’t you tell?  Anyhoo – I have noticed a trend out there which I am really drawn to – faux bois (aka fake wood) and I had to catalog my finds! Lighting, pillows, clothing, fabrics – anything having to do with trees, twigs or wood grain – it’s so rustic meets modern and graphic. All of the things and looks that I love! Anything with trees printed on it is okay in my book! So here are a few woodsy treats for the indoors! Enjoy!!

If you know me, you know how much I love wall decals!  They are a great way to add some interest to your walls for a great price!  These ones aren’t as woodsy as other finds on this page, but I think they are a great idea for a modern nursery!  How cute!

I just got this alarm clock (as a belated Christmas gift…long story!) and it looks so great in person!  Plus the sound is amazing and it has a lot of handy features!   Much better than a big, chunky, shiny plastic clock radio.

My apologies…

My apologies…

Hello out there!!

So I’d like to post a little apology to you all. I really do love writing on this blog (and I love the comments and seeing my stats rise!!) so I feel bad that I haven’t been able to keep up with it lately!! I am really working on taking photos of all of our DIY projects to post some fun “how-to’s” but I feel like I’ve had one thing stop me after another!! My brand new camera is in the shop (it doesn’t read memory cards so I can only take about 7 pictures at a time – ANNOYING!!), I had to go out of town for a training, and then when we got back our internet was down! So I’ve been gone for about a week – and I’ve felt like I was missing an appendage without my internet or camera!! But I’m back, hopefully my camera will be soon, and I have about 30 draft posts waiting for the finishing touches – so check back soon for some fun stuff!!

I’d also like to say thank you for hanging in there with me!! And don’t forget – if you’d like any design advice or have a room you’d like to be redone, don’t hesitate to visit me at my new website: http://www.lindsaychristensendesign.com or e-mail me at lindsay@lindsaychristensendesign.com!

Thanks again for reading!!! xo, Lindsay (& Harper!)

{10 Things That Make Me Happy!} Guest Blogger:: Stephanie from Sweet Tangerine Studio!

This week I have a special treat for you!  A guest blogger!!  I asked my friend Stephanie from the Etsy Shop Sweet Tangerine Studio to put together her list of “10 Things That Make You Happy” and she was happy to oblige!  So without further adieu, here is Stephanie’s 10 Things…

1. Candles: Any kind really….but I really love Black & White Co’s fragrant candles. They smell delicious, and have so many great scents to choose from, it is hard to pick a favorite! They also are packaged in a sweet little box, making them perfect to give as a gift for a friend, or for yourself! www.blackandwhiteco.com

2. Fiestaware: I love all the bright colors! My mom started this collection for me, and gives me one or two new pieces each year. It is such great quality…and looks so fun at a dinner party.

3. Stripes: I am a total sucker for anything with stripes!

4. Old Navy Flip Flops: I live in these in the summertime. They are super comfortable, and come in a variety of fun colors. Not too mention they are extremely affordable! 2 for $5.00….can’t beat that!!

5. Burts Bees Apricot Baby Oil: This smells so fabulous, and makes your skin baby soft! I love using this after my shower. This all natural oil is a must have in my book!

6. My Hobo International Rachel Tri-Fold Frame Wallet: I think this is the best wallet ever. I have one in an Olive color, and I get so many compliments whenever I pull it out of my bag. It is made out of a soft leather, and has so many great compartments for all your bills, checks, credit cards, etc. Super fashionable, but very functional as well!

7. My Down Comforter: I have to sleep with it every night…even in the summertime. It is just so cozy and comfy!

8. My sewing machine by Janome: I received this as a college graduation gift, and have used it constantly ever since. I love to sew and create new designs…especially handbags, cosmetic bags, and pillows. Check out my new shop on Etsy…..sweettangerinestudio.etsy.com

9. Via Motif Woven Accessories: I love the Pandan Tray with Palmwood Handles….such a great accessory. It is a perfect tray to serve guests, or just used as a tabletop accessory. These items are well-made, and have a great woven texture. My favorite is the Java color. I love these items so much, I also have the rectangular placemats, and many of their woven bathroom accessories!

10. Flower artwork from Guildmaster/Decorize: This was given to me as a gift, and I absolutely adore it! It adds such a great punch of color to my home, and is such a great statement piece.

Thanks, Stephanie!!!  What do you think of Stephanie’s things that make her happy?
