We have 2 large (8 feet wide by 4 feet tall) windows in our living room. Nice, but they’ve actually always been an eyesore since we moved in a year and a half ago because the previous owner apparently ran her sprinkler and let it hit the house. Here in Likely, this causes horrible water spots on the windows and you couldn’t even see through the bottom half of those windows! We’ve tried cleaning them with normal window cleaner and a few other solutions, but those didn’t take it off, and we kind of just gave up for now because we knew we needed something better. This has been driving Glenn’s dad crazy…almost every time he stopped by (he’s a UPS man so that is often!) he would say something about a product he heard about or asking us if we’ve tried something to fix it. Like I said, we pretty much ignored the problem and just kept the blinds closed!

Gross, right? We thought they were ruined and we had to live with them like this!

Now a few weeks ago Randy (Glenn’s dad) dropped off a little white jar of ‘stuff’ to clean windows, and we really didn’t think much of it. He does things like that all the time. We didn’t jump at the chance to try out this product or anything, it pretty much sat on top of our refrigerator for a week or so. So one Friday morning I’m making our bed and I stop to admire the view out of our sparkling-clean brand new bedroom window, wishing it was the same in the living room and then I remembered the little white jar. So I went out to the kitchen and found it, read the directions on the back, grabbed the materials I needed and went outside. I put some water in a stainless bowl, then you dip a sponge in to get it wet, dip that in the jar of white powder, and then go to work on the windows. I scrub a little circle, then grab a damp rag to wipe it off and in my amazement IT WORKED PERFECTLY!

Isn’t that a great view? We were seriously missing out and now we open the blinds every day! Our windows look brand new with very little effort and no harsh chemicals, thanks to a $4 jar of ‘magic’ powder! It’s called ‘Nothin’s Better Water Stain Remover’ (I’m not making this up) and it is worth its weight in gold!!

For you locals you can buy it at Carsten’s! Check out these results…before on the left, and after on the right.

See our little jar of the stuff out there? Love it! And to do both of our 8-foot windows and the storm door glass, it didn’t even take the whole 4 oz. jar. Next up is the camp trailer windows! You can use it on all kinds of surfaces (Glass, chrome, porcelain, tile, fiberglass, aluminum and stainless steel will shine and sparkle as new. Removes water, mineral stain, rust, scum, paint overspray, oxidization.)

I promise that I started the job, but as soon as Glenn noticed me out there working on the windows he came out to see how it was going. And took the scrubber from me because he had to try it. And he finished the job. Strangely, he does that a lot. I’m not going to complain.

Magic. Seriously. Go buy some now!

Do you have water spots? Do you have a ‘magic’ cleaning product you’d like to share? Please tell us!!

Have you ever wondered where those chilly drafts are coming from? If your windows are sealed tightly? How well your walls are insulated? Or if you have a moisture leak somewhere in your home? Maybe you should try having an Infrared Energy Audit done on your home.

‘What is an Infrared Energy Audit?’ you may ask…well, a qualified and trained professional (such as David, shown in the pictures below) comes into your home and uses an infrared camera to capture temperature differences in various areas throughout your home. Throughout their training, they learn the key areas to look at; appliances, corners, windows, etc. He or she will take infrared pictures of your home, compile them, do the research and create a detailed report to send back to you. They’ll give you tips on how you can fix inefficiencies that they find, and make recommendations on the next steps that you should take. It might be as simple as caulking a seal around a window, or they might recommend that you upgrade appliances (only a recommendation, though, but they can really tell how much energy that fridge is draining!).

These first 2 images are both sides of the brochure for the company that David works out of — feel free to download it and check it out. It might answer a few more questions, or it has the contact info. for The Rider Group, who was great to work with. They are based out of Reno, Nevada. Download the PDF of the brochure here. I should be receiving their detailed report any day now, and I’m excited to share those results with you as well!

The overall process took about an hour and a half (our house is approximately 1400 square feet), and he looked at every window, corner, closet, doorway, appliance and wall – and he even went outside to take infrared photos of the exterior, roof, and windows.

He even let me follow him around to take pictures of him and ask questions.

I was very interested to know how much of a difference our new windows were making, how well sealed our doors were, and if there were any leaks around the wood stove that he could see.

This window (in my office) is not new…brr.

Harper’s closet has the trap door to access the crawl space underneath the house, plus it’s back to back with the bathroom, so I wanted to make sure things were nice and clean there.

“What is this stranger doing in MY room?!?!”

Lots of moisture, even on our new windows…but I don’t think it has anything to do with the windows themselves.

The color differences account for temperature changes, and there is a handy little scale on the right side of the screen that can tell you exactly how hot or cold something is.

See the studs in the walls? Very handy (but expensive) stud finder.

He also measured and counted all of our windows to account for the proper ratio of heat loss that we should be having in our house (square footage/area of windows). Again, I’m very excited to see the results that he’s compiled and I’m sure I’ll share them next week.
Have a warm and toasty weekend! And Happy Thanksgiving!

As you might know, I try very hard to do my part in saving the planet. I know I could be better at certain things…i.e. I rely on my car waaayy too much, purchase more organic food options, compost, buy more organic clothing, etc., but I think I do pretty well in other areas. For instance, I use eco-friendly and chemical-free cleaning options (99% of the time – sometimes you need the chemical power, but not too often), I cloth-diaper my daughter, the disposable diapers and wipes that I do use are eco-friendly versions, we recycle as much as we can here, I buy organic food when the price is comparable or when it’s something that I feel I should purchase the organic version (with some foods it’s more important to buy the organic version and some you can relax with), but I really do a lot of research on eco-friendly product options how to live greener.

Well…there is one area of my life that made me feel so guilty in how I do things, so I decided to do something about it. Ready to hear what it is? It’s gonna blow your mind. Here we go. PRINTER INK. Yeah. If you’re like me, you go through a lot of printer ink with your projects. In design school, it was horrible. I would always have to make sure to have a few cartridges on hand, because when you’re printing all of the photos of products and reports/schedules for a project, I’d always go through a lot of ink. I go through a lot now with photocopying and printing projects for clients. And it can get expensive. But you have to have a printout with perfect colors because otherwise it really looks unprofessional.

I have a simple Hewlett Packard printer/scanner/copier that holds 2 cartridges; a black one and a tri-color. It has served its purpose well for me, but each cartridge is about $15. And they really don’t last that long. Plus keeping a big stash to recycle is a pain. So what did I do about? I finally decided to dive into the world of refilling my own printer cartridges. With anything you search for on Google, there are videos and how-to instructions about accomplishing this task. Looked easy enough. Then you can shop and compare prices. Like most of my office supplies, I bought a set of refills off of eBay; I do this because the prices are almost always lower than anywhere else, and they seriously arrive within a day or two. No Staples or Office Depot for me to pop in to around here – I use eBay. I’ve bought clipboards, file folders, hanging folders, pens, scissors, and now printer ink refills on eBay. If you click on the pictures you’ll see who I bought them from.

A black-ink refill kit and a tri-color refill kit, specific to my printer cost $10 with shipping and everything. I saved $20 and some plastic right there. Yes, I know that having things shipped to your house isn’t so eco-friendly (shipping truck emissions, etc.), but I try to buy in bulk whenever I can to help with this. I didn’t this time – I wanted to make sure it worked first – and I am very happy with how it all turned out, so I will be purchasing more kits in bulk next time – at least 3 or 4 of each. But I did buy both cartridges from the same eBay seller so that they’d be shipped in the same box.

Anyway on to my “Adventures in Saving the Planet.” The videos make refilling your own ink cartridges look easy peasy. It is, but as with most of my projects, my rookie attempt goes awry. My cartridges come in the mail, and I finally have a chance to sit down and get it done. I cut the packaging open, and cut right through the directions. Not good. I piece them back together, and realize there is a perforated tab on the back to prevent this. Oops. I finally figure out what I’m supposed to be doing and start with blue (or cyan) on the color cartridge. I pull the stopper off the top of the syringe and blue ink squirts all over my desk and all over my hands. I look down at my clothes…I’m clean – woo-hoo! Do not squeeze the bottle while taking the top off. I run and get some paper towels and clean up my desk, but my hands are now covered in blue spots. Oh well. I put the syringe into the correct hole and squeeze. Nothing happens. I pull it out a little and no ink will go into the cartridge. After trying for a few minutes I decide to let my handyman try it with his magic touch instead. I take the baby from him, put her to bed and when I come back I have a fully-inked cartridge – all 3 colors (cyan, magenta and yellow are done!) woo-hoo! Thanks, honey. He thinks that I was pushing it too far in. Who knows! I replace the sticker on the top with the new one that they provide (you gotta cover the holes) and the other plus is that there is still ink leftover in the refills. So technically I saved at least $50, not $20.

I try my hand out with the black one and I get it done – ALL BY MYSELF! I run the printer diagnostics on the computer to clean the cartridges, line them up, etc….I hadn’t done this for awhile (if ever) anyway – just to make sure they’re running smoothly. I print a test page with something I had to print anyway. Black prints great, but the colors don’t look right – mostly the greens. Hmm…I run another test page and it still isn’t right. Here is where I’m cursing that I wasted money with this and now I can’t print what I need to, and give up and go to bed. The next night, I run a couple a couple color copies of some things I needed, but I stay away from the ones with green in them. They look great. After trying the non-green ones, I get the courage to see how the green looks. Crossing my fingers and… it worked perfectly!! I’m assuming it just needed a little time to saturate itself or something, but my first attempt at refilling my own ink cartridges was definitely successful!! Except for the blue fingers.

Am I late on this one, or do any of you refill your own printer cartridges? I love that I saved so much money and plastic…plus I love a little DIY project – even if it does take a couple attempts to get it right. What else do you do to help reduce waste???

Laminate flooring is a wondrous thing. It comes in hundreds of styles and colors, looks great (if you pick the right product and install it correctly), can take a beating, is an eco-friendly product to use (little to no waste in manufacturing and glueless nature), and can be very inexpensive to use throughout the home. When we moved into our house last July, we knew we had to immediately rip out the old carpets and I knew I wanted hard flooring throughout. New carpeting glues, and in most cases, the carpet itself can off-gas nasty VOC’s, plus you can never really get it clean! The dirt, hair, dust, etc., etc., gets smushed down permanently into the carpet, and as a pregnant lady I didn’t want my new baby crawling around in that. I was all about the healthiest environment possible for me and my future child, as well as an easy-on-the-budget option, so we chose laminate for our new home. Plus Glenn had installed it a few times in other houses, and we knew we could save money by Glenn installing it himself.

Lucky for us, our 45 year old brick house was PERFECTLY square and solidly built. We have a rather large living room, and from one end to the other, the laminate was laying perfectly square — unlike the other houses that Glenn has installed laminate in. It just makes the job a million times easier, so that was a huge gift. In some houses, by the time you get to the other end of the room, you’re cutting your end pieces at an angle and that is no good!

The brand that we purchased was Alloc (the color is Cognac Merbau) — both the flooring and the underlayment (foam barrier between sub-floor and floating laminate) — and it was a simple locking mechanism installation that is glue-free! You lay down the underlayment, then the flooring and you’re done!

Here are the recommended tools that we used:

Right angle/t-square, or some other tool to mark perpendicular lines

Pencil – for marking your lines and cuts

Chop Saw – for cleanly cutting your planks

Jig Saw (optional) – for cutting angles or curves, etc.

Small rubber mallet – for locking the planks together

Razor blade – for cutting extra underlayment off

And… — that’s it!

Laying the underlayment was simple — lay the roll down with a 1/2 inch coming up the wall (you’ll trim it later with the razor blade). It has an adhesive strip on the long side that you peel off and stick to the top of the next layer. This simply floats on top of the floor — no gluing or taping necessary. Easy peasy – that was the pregnant lady’s job. I had to feel helpful!!

Now to lay the actual flooring, you simply start at the left side of the room, right on top of the floating underlayment, and the left side depending on which way you want your grain to run (you always go left to right, that’s where the locking mechanisms are) — lock the short ends together and when you get to the end of the row, you flip the last plank right-side down to measure where to cut. Lay the end that you will be keeping in this row against the wall (flooring side up towards you), lay your right angle on it where the second to last plank ends and mark your cut. We used a chop saw to cut the pieces in one clean stroke, then you have your short piece for the right end and your starting piece for the next row! Repeat, repeat, repeat. The rubber mallet can be handy to help lock long rows in place — and an extra pair of hands is always helpful when you’re tackling a project on your own. Just be careful when knocking with the mallet – you don’t want to damage the locking mechanism of the planks.

Angles and curves can be a little tricky, but we found after a few runs, we could figure out the right cut — so it’s a good thing that the single boxes are inexpensive (about $25/box – covers ~22 square feet), and you should always buy a little extra (a good rule of thumb is 10%) to account for waste and mistakes.

I love the rich look of our dark flooring – I think it looks a lot more expensive than it actually was! – and it is holding up great after the first year. Always check the warranties (laminate has a shorter warranty than hardwood most of the time), but I can almost guarantee you will be very happy with your faux-bois floor. My steam cleaner cleans it up great, and I even have those ding-repair brown markers to fill it any injuries! Unfortunately, it does show dirty dog prints, but I think any flooring you have (light vs. dark) will show SOMETHING! It’s just motivation to keep those floors clean!

Note: I’m linking this post to Julia’s Hooked on Fridays post at Hooked on Houses! Go check it out!!

I am always on the lookout for better/quicker/easier/greener ways and products to clean my house with, and I think that I’ve got a pretty great arsenal of “cleaning weapons” that help me get the job done! I always try to go chemical-free if possible, and if I am using some sort of cleaning product, I only use the “green” kind. Here are my weapons of choice!

My biggest pet peeve in my house, and what I spend the most time cleaning (by far!) is definitely my floors. With 2 big dogs that shed and dig, a husband who lives in work boots, and a crawling baby, the floors need to be cleaned every day. Now if they get cleaned every day is a different story, but they could use it daily! We have laminate throughout the house, and linoleum in the kitchen and laundry area, so it’s nice that all the dirt and hair isn’t stuck in the carpet, and when it’s clean, we know it’s clean! But this means a lot of dirt and hair collects, and I’ve found the easiest way to clean all of that up is by a combination of sweeping and vacuuming. I use a regular old broom and dust pan to sweep up the dirt, but this doesn’t work too great for the dog hair. It seems to really blow the hair around, plus sweeping doesn’t work around the area rugs, so after I sweep, I vacuum. And after I vacuum, I steam mop.

Here’s what’s in my arsenal to clean my floors (click on the photos to shop):

We have a Bissell Lift-Off, which has been used within an inch of its life at our house. It cleans our hard floors, rugs, furniture, windowsills, mattresses (yes, I vacuum our mattresses occasionally)…my only complaint is that it is a little heavy to lug out each time I want to clean the floors really quickly. I think I need a lighter “Stick Vac,” but I haven’t done the research yet.

This (above) is my new favorite thing. I ordered it as a late Mother’s Day gift for myself…during HSN’s July sales (always shop there in July!!). It cleans the floors so great, with NO CHEMICALS!! Which is great because Harper is on the move now! My only complaint with this is that the cord is short so I have to switch outlets a few times when cleaning the house. I highly recommend it for your floors, though!! Especially because you just throw the pad in the washing machine (it comes with 2) and that’s it!! And mine also came with some yummy eucalyptus mint fragrance oil for the water…makes the house smell nice and fresh!

So I guess I haven’t realized how many Bissell products we own until now…

The Spot Bot is great for carpets, rugs, upholstery, etc. You push a button and walk away…I use this on our Flor rug in the living room, and on our couch. Well, Glenn cleans the couch more than I do, but this is what we use. I don’t like to use the conventional carpet shampoos that come with it because of the chemicals…most of the time I just use hot water and it works fine. But sometimes you need some kind of detergent, and I like the brand (and have easy access to) “Earth Friendly Products” and I want to try their carpet shampoo in my Spot Bot.

Another brand that I like to use around the house is called “Bright Green.” I pick it up at Safeway when I’m out of town for Harper’s doctor appointments…no Safeways for 70 miles! But so far I’ve been happy with the products I’ve tried: the All Purpose Cleaner works great on my furniture for dusting and fingerprints, the Glass Cleaner makes my mirrors sparkly, and (my favorite and most used) the Dish Wash Liquid doesn’t dry out my hands and smells like Lavender. Yep…no dishwasher at Casa Christensen. Unless you consider me the dishwasher…

If I really need to get something good and clean, and in my opinion the strongest chemical cleaners don’t even compare, I go back to using steam with my handheld steam cleaner.

This little baby cleans everything. Soap scum, toilets, hard water stains, baby toys (GREAT for baby stuff with all those little crevices, plastic numbers, etc.!). I use them with my 2nd favorite cleaning tools (2nd to my steam cleaner) – a big ‘ol stack of microfiber cleaning cloths.

I have a stack of these sitting in my laundry room and I use them for everything – almost completely replacing paper towels. I only use paper towels to cook bacon in the microwave now, ha! They come in a pack of 40, and I still haven’t used all of them one time. I grab one, clean whatever I need to clean – countertops, baby hands or faces, cutting board, coffee table, TV screen, etc., etc., then I throw it in the washing machine to be washed with the next load and I still have a clean stack waiting. AWESOME!

Although I have my handheld Scunci steam cleaner to clean my toilets, sometimes you need a little eucalyptus scent in the bathroom, which is why I love the Method Lil’ Bowl Blu Toilet Bowl Cleaner. It just makes it feel a little more sparkly and to smell better. I like Method brand products – I also use their Naked hand soaps all over my house! But I really need some pretty dispensers for them.

And for laundry, I’ve really been loving Seventh Generation stuff. I buy it from diapers.com when I order my disposable diapers (I do mainly use cloth, though!). I can wash Harper’s stuff in it, as well as ours and it works great! Plus it’s rated for high efficiency machines. Have I mentioned that I love diapers.com?

Well that’s about it for my “Weapons of Choice” post – if you have any questions about any of it, feel free to leave me a comment for shoot me an e-mail (lindsay [@] lindsaychristensendesign.com). I love to help fellow greenies (or greenie wannabe’s!) out! I also really recommend the book “The Complete Organic Pregnancy” even if you’re not pregnant – it has great green tips and it’s an easy read.

How about you? Do you have any other green tips or green products that you love to use??

We have finally gotten back to the backyard project — although the mountain of gravel is still there, ugh. We do have someone who is going to come get the rest, so hopefully they’ll come do that soon! Anyway, we’ve fenced off the sections that will be grass, planted, fertilized and watered, so now we’re waiting…and watching the grass grow! Yes, we have grass!!!

Here is what we’ve been up to:

I cannot wait to 1) get the gravel out of there, 2) have enough grass to take the fences down, and 3) actually like my backyard. It hasn’t happened yet, which is unfortunate during the summer!! Patience, Lindsay, patience…

When you live in Likely and get out of town, you have to go to Wal-Mart! We spotted them right as we were leaving the store so we snagged them up and so far they are working wonderfully. They’ve even survived an 8-month old pulling one over on the coffee table! They are the Anchor Hocking 6-Piece Eco Tumbler Glassware Set and they are just what we were looking for! They are nice and sturdy with a slight green tinge (which is fine, as our kitchen is green), and the best part is these green tumblers are produced with a minimum of 35% recycled or reclaimed glass. The packaging also contains 25% post consumer materials and sustainable inks! And the second best part is that they are only $7.97 for a set of 6! They are also made in the USA, which sometimes you really have to look for when shopping at Wal-Mart.

A pretty sweet find if you ask us!
